Southold-Peconic

So this is what a real spring looks like! It’s been so long since we’ve had one. I hope you’re loving it as much as I am.

Congratulations to Dave Brennan and Rob Spitzenberg on their acquisition of an 80-foot super cruiser, “The Peconic Express.” Go to peconicstar.com. Pictures of the new boat will be up soon!

I mentioned that the Mixed Nuts Relay for Life Team will be sponsoring two raffles, but I’ve learned about a third: the fishing raffle. Fishing trips aboard the Donna Mae, Peconic Star and Prime Time III, as well as a rod and reel combination from Wego Bait and Tackle, will be offered. Raffle tickets can be purchased from any team member.

You can also purchase raffle tickets at the Mixed Nuts’ benefit yard sale this Saturday, April 24, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., at 285 Old Wood Path in Southold. The rain date is the 25th. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

Joanne and Mark Solo are thrilled about their daughter Jackie’s recent appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Jackie will graduate from Southold High School in June.

Walter Berry, Janet Dickerson and Charlie Manwaring were the winners of the “Jelly Belly” dart league championship that took place at Sophie’s. They defeated the team of Bill Boergesson, Bill Gaffga and Rob Guariello.

Southold Fire Department’s annual installation of officers was held last Saturday at Giorgio’s. Keith Cummings was sworn in as chief and Bill Byrnes as first assistant. New second assistant Peggy Killian made history as the department’s first female chief. Honors were given to Harold “Hoagie” Haupt, Firefighter of the Year; James Rich III, EMS Provider of the Year; Ed Rudder, Chief Driver of the Year; and David Surozenski, Probationary Firefighter of the Year. Congratulations to all.

Belated happy birthday to Patty Boyle, who celebrated on the 17th. Adam Siejka cuts his cake today, the 22nd, and Vinnie Macchirole, Kyle Van Duzer and Elaine White celebrate on the 27th.

Two special couples will celebrate wedding anniversaries on the 26th: My mother- and father-in law, Kay and Tom Byrnes, and my parents, Kathy and Alec Elak. May you enjoy many more years together.

Connie Ruk will enjoy four weeks of healthy eating as the winner of the Sang Lee raffle at Southold Free Library. Thanks to Fred and Karen Lee for their generous donation. May’s prize, donated by Tina Koslosky, is a Creative Memories “Everyday Display with Love” for your photos, messages and mementos. The winning ticket will be drawn May 15.
