Mattituck-Laurel

Today is not only Tax Day but the 25th anniversary of the Mattituck Fire Department Junior Bulldogs. These young people plan a celebration in the near future but in the meantime held their annual elections last week. This year’s officers are Captain, Chelsea Ficner; Lieutenant, Veronica Stelzer; treasurer, Brandon McMahon and secretary, Barry Miller. Congratulations to the new officers and to the Bulldogs on 25 years of service to our community!

Reminder: The annual Relay for Life is just around the corner. If you’d like to join a team or creating a new team, please attend the next meeting, Monday April 19, at 7 p.m. at Mattituck High School. Contact Deb VanDuzer at 734-5050 with questions.

The Mattituck-Laurel Library winter book club was scheduled to end April 13, but Bev Wowak received so many requests to extend it that it will now run through April 20. You have one extra week to bring in your Reader Cards, pick up your cool wooden spoon and enter more tickets for the raffle. Mark your calendar for the Get Cookin’ get-together on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments, prizes, book talk … can it get any better then that? Contact Bev with questions at 298-4134, ext. 6, or [email protected].

At the library, you will also find the student art exhibit, “Embrace the Creativity,” on display through April 30. It features works by over 200 students in grades 5-12 in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District. A reception and awards presentation will take place Thursday, April 22, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The Mattituck Lions have extended the application deadline for prospective Strawberry Queens to April 19. This is a great opportunity for young women to highlight their community service, accomplishments and plans for the future while representing our community. Applications are available in the high school guidance office.

It’s birthday time for the following folks: Nick Lentini and Olivia Finn today, April 15; Ashley Wilsberg, Carey Kaelin and Larry Kelly on the 16th; Hannah Grace Fitzgerald, who turns 12, on the 17th; Lee Harned, Nancy Baxter and Bernadette Mahoney on the 19th; and Bryan Tyler on the 20th.

The Mattituck High School SADD club is sponsoring its first annual Tucker Bowl on Friday, April 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is a competition between the four grades and faculty that includes volleyball, paintball, dodgeball and scooter relays. There will be also be entertainment from some student volunteers. Admission is $5 or $2 with a toiletry item (toothpaste, shampoo, etc) to be donated to CAST. Proceeds also help the club fund prevention activities for students in our community. Everyone is welcome!

It’s that time of year again! The Ospreys are returning to the North Fork for their second season of baseball and hosts are needed. Host families do not need to provide transportation or meals. Last year the Ospreys provided competitive baseball in a family-friendly environment. If you can offer a bed and bath to an aspiring college baseball player, call Joe Finora, 298-4086.
