The theme for National Library Week, April 11-17, is “Communities thrive @ our libraries.” This is not only an opportunity to pay tribute to our libraries as centers of learning, it’s also an opportunity to give thanks to our local librarians for their knowledge and expertise. The East End Education Enrichment Coalition, a group of local nonprofits that support and promote children’s education on the North Fork, invite you to a free family concert combining music, theater and culture on Saturday, April 17, at 2 p.m. in the Cutchogue East School gym. Lincoln Center teaching artist and Parent’s Choice award-winners Robbi K and Friends will perform.

Work by local artists Evelyn Lucas and Carol Burst are on display for April in Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library’s mezzanine gallery. This month’s Monday morning book discussion on April 19 will feature “The Zookeeper’s Wife” by Diane Ackerman. AARP is offering a two-day driver safety program on Thursday and Friday, April 22 and 23, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. $12 for members, $14 for nonmembers.

When Daniel Bladykas discovered a 60-plus-mile skateboarding trail from Esom, Ga., to Smyrna, Ga., he immediately grasped its fundraising potential. Dan and Bill Gremler, both 2003 Mattituck High School graduates, have launched “Skate for a Cure” to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, a cause close to their hearts. It’s a special privilege for North Fork Reform Synagogue to honor the spirit and the memory of the Jews of Tabor, and to keep the memories alive of all those who suffered in the Holocaust. All are welcome as the NFRS commemorates Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day, at a special service this Friday night, April 16, at 8 p.m. For more information, call 722-5712.

The Ospreys baseball team returns soon for its second season of North Fork baseball and host families are needed. If you can offer a bed and bath to an aspiring college baseball player please call Joe Finora at 298-4086.

Librarians aren’t the only ones with a day in their honor this month. Wednesday, April 21, is Administrative Professionals Day. You can acknowledge your administrative assistants by taking them to Southold Rotary’s annual chicken dinner at Soundview Restaurant, also on April 21, from noon to 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $18 each from any Rotary member or at the door. I was astounded last week when I drove by Suffolk County National Bank in Mattituck and the sign read 89 degrees at 3:33 p.m. This beautiful spring weather makes for an enjoyable spring house and yard cleanup.
