Bomb Disposal officers from the Suffolk County Police Department removed a naval artillery round from a home in Cutchogue Sunday after the owner of the home approached Southold Police with questions about the military ordinance, town police said.

William Schwartz, 65, of Little Neck Road dropped by Southold Police headquarters Sunday afternoon to inquire about the artillery round, which he told police was given to him about 10 years ago.

After showing police digital images of the device, which did not indicate if it was inert or otherwise not a live round, the bomb disposal unit was called to the home, police said. The unit removed the round in a specially designed bomb disposal trailer for destruction at the Westhampton bomb range.

Mr. Schwartz told police he had handled the ordinance round many times over the years without incident, police said.
