Mattituck High School’s band and chorus took home top honors this month at the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey, Pa.
The program, held at various venues around the country, is designed to encourage and reward excellence among high school music students. Schools have an option of receiving ratings for their performances or competing with other school musicians for trophies. Performances are judged to be superior, excellent, good, fair or poor.
The senior high school band and jazz band each brought home first place trophies and the senior high mixed chorus and select chorus each placed second in their competitions. The jazz band also took home the trophy as the best jazz band at the competition, regardless of school population and class..
“In a true testament to their hard work throughout the school year, each performing group received a superior rating, earning between 90 and 100 ratings, said teacher Timonth Caskin.
In the jazz ensemble, individual honors went to Colin McCoy and Zach Branker as outstanding percussionists; Michelle Rosnack, outstanding vocal solois; Kira Buckel, outstanding musician on the piano; and the saxaphone section took a prize for outstanding section.
In the concert band, individual honors went to Claire Smith as outstanding soloist on the French horn; Ashley Finger, outstanding soloist on the flute; and Kira Buckel, outstanding musician on the piano.
Inidividual honors for chorus went to Megan Radigan, outstanding solist; Kira Buckel, outstanding accompanist; and Zach Branker, outstanding accompanist.
Groups from New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland and Vireginia participated in the competition on May 8.
