Betsy B. Latham

Betsy B. Latham of Orient died May 13 at San Simeon by the Sound Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Greenport. She was 101 years old.

She was born April 27, 1909, in Greenport to Edgar Jerome and Jennie (Corwin) Brooks. Raised in Greenport, she graduated from Greenport High School.

She was married to Bryant Webster Young, who predeceased her, and later George E. Latham, who also predeceased her. Ms. Latham worked as a homemaker.

She was a member of Orient Congregational Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir, and the Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary.

Ms. Latham was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed arranging fresh flowers, knitting, crocheting and seamstress work.

In addition to her first and second husbands, she was predeceased by her daughter, Joyce Y. Wysocki in 1996; son, Bryant W. Young in 2007; grandson, Webster Y. Wysocki in 1958; and stepson, George E. Latham Jr. She was also predeceased by her two sisters, Louise I. Brooks in 1998 and Winifred C. Brooks in 2007.

Ms. Latham is survived by her son-in-law, William L. Wysocki of Orient; daughter-in-law, Louise M. Young of Ocala, Fla.; seven grandchildren: Betsy Dzenkowski of East Marion, Winifred McCarthy of Vermilion, Ohio, Deborah Orlowski of Mattituck, William G. Wysocki of Orient, Diane Hope of Alachua, Fla., Kathy Laderwager of Coram and Beverly Saylor of Asbury, N.J.; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Orient Congregational Church, led by the Rev. Ann Van Cleef. Interment will follow at Orient Central Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be made to Orient Fire Department, Orient Congregational Church or San Simon by the Sound Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
