Roy C. Taplin

Roy C. Taplin of Southold died at his home on Friday, May 7, 2010. He was 82 years old.

Mr. Taplin was born in Patchogue on Aug. 16, 1927, to Gladys (nà e Zimmerman) and Robert Taplin and spent his childhood in Greenport. In 1945, he graduated from Greenport High School and then served for two years in the United States Army.

On Aug. 30, 1953, he married Carol Tuthill in Greenport and together they made their home in Southold.

Roy was the owner and operator of Taplin Plumbing and Heating for 50 years and spent 10 years as a maintenance worker with the Southold school district.

In the community, Roy was a member of the Junior Order of Mechanics, the Masons (Peconic Lodge #349) of Greenport and the First Presbyterian Church of Southold, and he was a former volunteer fireman with the Greenport Fire Department-Standard Hose Company.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Taplin; two sons, Roy H. (Pam) Taplin of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Todd A. (Kathy) Taplin of Loxahatchee, Fla.; siblings, George Taplin of Shelter Island, Martha Foster of Port Arthur, Texas, Doris Wiggins of Somerset, Mass., Jean Jacobs of Southold and Helen Finne of Southold; and four grandchildren, Courtney and Amanda Taplin of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and Michael and Kaitlyn Taplin of Loxahatchee, Fla. Also surviving are four brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law and 40 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert Taplin.

The family received friends May 12 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Southold with the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery.
