Dorothy Jones

Dorothy Marie Frances (Dixon) Jones died on Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Riverhead Care Center surrounded by family members. She was 89 years old.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1920, to Loretta and James Dixon of Cutchogue. She attended East Cutchogue Elementary School and was a 1938 graduate of Southold High School. She was a lifetime member of the Parish of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Cutchogue and served for several years as both president and district deputy in the Columbiettes for both Stirling and Marian Councils. She was also an active participant in Sacred Heart School Mother’s Club, East Cutchogue PTA, Our Lady of Fatima, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and, at the age of 51, was a den mother for Cub Scouts.

On June 23, 1946, she married Harold Daniel Jones of Peconic and together they had six children, three boys and three girls.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harold, her brother, Myron Dixon, and sister Rita Cox. She is survived by her older sister and lifelong sidekick, Margaret (Midge) Marcell of Southold; her six children (and spouses): Margaret “Peg” Kaelin (Fred Jr.), Harold “Dan” Jones Jr. (Martha), Dennis Jones (Susan), Corrine Rempe (Fred), Loribeth “Lorie” Russell (Steve) and Kevin Jones (Melissa); her 16 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

In the purest of forms Dorothy, (also referred to by close family and friends as “Dude”), embodied a spirit for living. Throughout her life she maintained a devout relationship to her beloved Creator. Her gift to this world was her ability to spread the beauty of unconditional love in the most unsuspecting and simplest of ways. With a playful twinkle in her eyes she would deliver her quick Irish wit when a smile was needed and knew comfort could be found in the silence of a mother’s touch, or in a few kind words. She loved to sing and dance, eat peanut butter’n’jelly sandwiches with a cup of tea for lunch; to tease the store clerk just to brighten their day, and cheer for her Yankees, among just a few of life’s simple pleasures.

Dorothy was a dedicated and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, in-law, and friend to all. In spite of hardships such as being widowed at age 46, she was steadfast in her faith, convictions and duties.

She will live forever in the hearts and minds of the people she touched and in the generations of family to come. She created this legacy in the small 4-foot, 10-inch frame of a proud Irish woman, who for those who knew her stood 10 feet tall.

May God continue to spread His love through you, Mom, and thank you for showing us all the way.

Family members received visitors on Monday, May 10, at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 11, at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Cutchogue where she had celebrated all of her Sacraments. Interment was followed at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, in Cutchogue.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a Veterans Program, Home or Hospital of your choice or to Sacred Heart Parish in Cutchogue would be a wonderful way to honor her memory.
