Those April showers are behind us, but today, May 6, the Southold Historical Society’s Spring Showers dinner will be held at the Soundview from noon to 8 p.m. Your choice of roast chicken, fish or a vegetarian entrà e will be served and a cash raffle will be held. Dinner tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Prince Building on Main Road in Southold or at the door.

The historical society’s education of youth committee is looking for volunteers with a fondness for history (particularly Southold’s) to join its cadre of program leaders. Call the office at 765-5500 or committee chair Peggy Murphy at 765-3598 if you are interested.

May 1 marked the start of the Relay for Life’s “Paint the Town Purple” campaign. Purple represents cancer prevention and serves as a reminder that we all should make positive lifestyle changes. One free purple bow per family is available at Ivy League Florist in Southold and flags can be purchased at North Fork Fun ‘n’ Fitness in Southold.

Congratulations to the Southold music department for its high standings at the recent Music in the Parks competitions. They won first place in their categories, and also received the Esprit de Corps award. Senior Jacob Boergesson won the Overall Vocal Soloist award. Great job!

Belated happy birthday to Patrick Allen, who blew out seven candles on April 28, and Christopher Hanold Jr., who turned 13 on the 30th.

Southold Sunshine Society members were delighted to honor one of their own as Dot Greet celebrated her 100th birthday April 27. A luncheon was held for Dot at Holy Trinity Church in Greenport. Dot has been spreading sunshine in our area for over 30 years. Supervisor Scott Russell was on hand to offer his personal best wishes and present Dot with a celebratory proclamation from the Town Board.

Birthday wishes for this week got to Kevin Quarty, who turns 30 today, May 6; Dan McGunnigle on the 9th; Liz Anderson (who turns 16) and Laryssa Cornell on the 11th; and Jim Stahl and Victoria Surozenski on the 12th.

Pauline and Mike Pharr have a new grandson, Nikolai, born April 24 to daughter Charlotte and her husband, Alex Vishnyakov, of Brooklyn. Nikolai was excitedly welcomed by his big sister, Lilia, who’s doing a great job in her new role.

At the North Fork Volunteer Firemen’s 78th anniversary dinner last weekend, outgoing president Gary Haupt received a plaque from his father, Harold “Hoagie” Haupt, who had also served as president from 1968 to 1970. This is the first time in the organization’s history that two generations have served as president.

A bridal shower for Tina Goldsmith was held last Sunday at the Founders Landing Wharf House. Tina will marry Kevin Quarty in July.

A Southold PTA emergency meeting will take place Monday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the elementary library. It’s possible there will not be a PTA for the next school year unless board positions are filled. Be sure and attend this important meeting.
