Dorothy E. Klenawicus

Former Shelter Islander Dorothy E. Staples Klenawicus died on Monday, May 31, 2010, in Titusville, Fla. She was 78 years old.

Dorothy was born in Greenport on Jan. 14, 1932, to Dorothy and Stuart D. Staples. She was a 1950 graduate of Greenport High School.

For many years she enjoyed teaching preschool children on Shelter Island. She coached contestants and finalists in the Strawberry Queen judging in Mattituck and worked for the Town of Shelter Island as a jail matron for 24 years.

While retired in Titusville, Fla., she was a member of coin clubs, played Scrabble with friends and enjoyed watching billiard tournaments when they came to the Titusville area.

She was predeceased by her sister, Priscilla Cann, and is survived by her daughter, Susan Klenawicus of Shelter Island; three brothers, Stuart E. Staples of Amlin, Ohio, and Robert G. Staples and Halsey A. Staples, both of Greenport; six nieces and 10 nephews.

Interment will take place Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 9:30 a.m. in the Staples family plot at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
