I’ve been writing this column 21 years this month and there’s nothing that brings a smile to my face more than when I pick up the phone and a child’s voice is on the other end wanting to acknowledge something about a loved one. To my delight, last week’s call came from Cassie and Teagan Nine, who wanted to send their grandfather, Ray Nine, a special 70th birthday wish. Ray’s family had a surprise party for him but I’d bet this wish from his special girls is the best gift of all!

Graduation is this Saturday at 10 a.m. and there are always many things to celebrate at this time of year. The Class of 2010 is entering the world in uncertain times, but knowing these great kids, I’m sure our future is in good hands. Congratulations!

The Kowalsick girls have a lot going on. Ali has a birthday June 18 and has won a future secondary teaching scholarship from the Isabelle Farrington School of Education at Sacred Heart University, where she just finished her freshman year. Sister Dana will attend the Aaron Copeland School of Music in the months ahead, and youngest sister Samantha will start her senior year at MHS in September. Best of luck to you all!

A toast to 40 years of wedded bliss goes out this week to Lenny and Marjorie Llewellyn, who celebrate their anniversary on June 28.

A round of applause to Tim Caskin and the Mattituck High School Jazz Ensemble for winning the prestigious Grand Sweepstakes Award for the highest score of all instrumental groups that participated at Hershey Music in the Parks this May. Bravo!

Milta Annunziata and her son, Paul, were invited by NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who hosts an annual event at Gracie Mansion, to kick off the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Paul shared the day with his uncle Edwin Gonzalez, who participates each year as a Hispanic member of the NYPD. Paul had a picture taken with NYC Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Milta had her moment of fame in a photo taken with the mayor.

Happy birthday wishes go to Stephanie Sweeney on the 27th; Mark Sisson on the 28th; Chris and Stephen Milner and Blaise Bennardo on the 29th; and Frank Raynor Jr. on the 30th.

Happy anniversary wishes go to Dennis and Bernadette Deerkoski on June 26.
