Joseph P. Aksten

Joseph P. Aksten of Southold died June 20 at his home. He was 79.

He was born in Greenport to Frank and Magdalena (Strumski) Aksten on July 9, 1930. After attending Southold schools, he served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

He worked as a carpenter for Goldsmith Brothers and later for Goldsmith’s Boat Shop.

For more than 50 years, he was a volunteer with the Southold Fire Department. According to his family, he enjoyed hunting, gardening and reading.

Mr. Aksten is survived by his siblings, Madelyn Skelly of Brentwood, Helen Frerichs of Mattituck and Julia Cooper of Aquebogue. He was predeceased by siblings Ann Wysocki, Agnes Ciccone, Alex and Frank.

The family received visitors June 22 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where the Southold Fire Department held firematic services. Graveside services with military honors were conducted June 23 at Calverton National Cemetery by Deacon Bob Dejewski.
