Greenport

It’s simply incredible to me that June is halfway over and that when the next issue of the Times hits the newsstand, it will be my last day of work until September. They say time flies when you’re having fun. I guess that’s further proof that I really do love my job.

Congratulations to Mike Comanda and Len Skuggevik on completing their first years as superintendent of schools and secondary principal, respectively. Blown boilers (not one, but two), leaky roofs and massive state aid cuts were on the platter served to Mike this year and he overcame all the obstacles — and still came to work with a smile on his face each morning.

Len is just bristling with ideas to make Greenport an even more wonderful school to attend. I think, perhaps, he might be an even bigger Porter supporter than I am, and that’s saying something! I don’t think the students of Greenport (and Oysterponds, for that matter) could ask for a better team than Mike and Len.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to mention a third member of the administrative team. Paul Read has decided it’s time to enjoy life outside of the walls of Greenport schools and will retire at the end of the year. Thank you, Paul, for your time and dedication to the students of Greenport.

Carol Gillooly and I actually talked about this next item. Her daughter, who hails from Orient, was a bridesmaid; my son, who resides in Greenport, was a groomsman; and the ceremony took place in Southold. We discussed who’d have dibs on reporting in it their column. I won! Therefore, I’d like to offer congratulations to Denise and Dean Karavas, who were married June 12 at Southold Presbyterian Church.

Denise, daughter of Donna and Dave Angevine of Greenport, was a most beautiful bride. Dean’s handsomeness complimented her perfectly. His parents, Gloria and Thomas, are former Greenport residents. I wish Denise and Dean a lifetime of happiness together.

Attention Greenport High School Class of 2000: Ryane Rogers is in the midst of organizing your 10-year reunion, which will take place Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Townsend Manor Inn. Please e-mail her at [email protected] with a yes or a no on your attendance.

He told me his name (and more specifically, his birthday) has never appeared in my column, so this week I’m sending out special birthday wishes to Geno Mazzaferro, whose special day is June 17. I hope you have an exceptional day, Geno.

Also in the birthday limelight this week are Art Comiskey, Bobby Mills and Shyane Jones, also on the 17th; Joan Olszewski on the 18th; Dominick Skabeikis and Michele Dinizio on the 19th; Littia Floyd on the 20th; Joe Barszczewski on the 21st; and Clara Jauquet on the 22nd.
