Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad members transfer accident victim John Burns of Peconic to the Suffolk County Police medevac helicopter at Peconic School late Friday afternoon shortly after a Main Road collision.

A man involved in a near head-on car crash on Main Road in Peconic was airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center Monday afternoon. Two other people, a husband and wife, were taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Police said it appears that John Burns, 45, of Peconic was driving a Volvo wagon westbound on Route 25 when he veered into the eastbound lane and struck a BMW sedan just east of Wells Avenue. Dennis Driscoll, 69, and his wife, Denny, 67, of Garden City were driving in the BMW.

Traffic was temporarily diverted to the North Road following the accident.
