John Brush Jr. blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to help lift Skippers to an 11-8 victory over Pool King on Monday night in a Greenport Men’s Softball League game at the Polo Grounds.

Pool King took an early two-run lead on a Mike McGinness double.

But Skippers battled back and tied the score in the third on Matt Verity’s home run. That set the stage for Brush’s go-ahead homer.

The win improved Skippers’ record to 4-1.

In other action, league-leading Founders Tavern improved to 4-0 with a 17-2 win over Claudio’s on Friday night. The red-hot Founders lineup continued to lace the ball all around the park as Carl Ruthinoski homered, Jon Schlachter went 4 for 4 with four runs scored, and Rob Stanevich, Jayme Bednoski, Brian Schriefer and Ed Michaelis all had three hits each. Bednoski drove in a pair of runs. Dan Olstad added two hits.

Chris Golden pitched another sensational game and the Founders defense turned in several sparkling plays.

“This is the best we’ve played in a long time,” Schlachter said. “This week will be our test, as we’ve got games with Marcello and Skippers. They are proven winners. If we want to be good, we’ve got to go through them.”

Ian Ryan had a two-run double in the second inning for Claudio’s only runs of the game. Claudio’s dropped to 0-3.

Marcello Masonry (3-0) had its scheduled game against Pete’s Boys rained out on Friday. John Hansen, Marcello’s pitcher, believes his team’s games against Founders and Southold Fish Market this week “will be a good test for our team.”

So far this season, Hansen and teammate Bob Marcello have been off to red-hot starts hitting the ball.

Last Wednesday, Southold Fish Market rallied to beat Pool King, 10-8. A three-run sixth inning sparked Southold Fish Market (2-2) to the win. With Pool King leading 8-7, Brin Klinge tied the score for Southold Fish Market with his run-scoring double. When his hit was misplayed in the outfield, Klinge came all the way around to score the go-ahead run.
