Greenport

That’s it, folks; May is over and June is here. In the blink of an eye, the school year will end (I’m sure you’ll know by all the shouts from the adults in the Greenport Schools building) and summer vacation will be here!

Mary Oliver would like to recognize the following volunteers who participated in the first- and second-grade Reading Partners Program at Greenport School: Jack and DeDe Campbell, Shirley Corazzini, Marjorie Day, Jack Denne, Anne Lowry, Dorothy Lucex, Arlene Marvin, Alma Mihalik, Sue Mihalik, Paula Shengold and Donald Smith. On behalf of the participating students, Ms. Oliver thanks them all for their time and interest. They enjoyed this year’s program so much that they hope to be able to continue it next year.

Attention parents of varsity athletes in Greenport and Southold schools: Please remind your student-athletes that there will be a joint awards ceremony for varsity athletes only on Monday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. at Southold.

Three Greenport High School students were nominated for this year’s Teeny Awards (like the Tony Awards) recognizing achievement in high school theater: Holly Sponza, Kaitlin McElroy (student choreography, “Grease”) and Esteban Rodriguez (playbill/poster art, “Grease”). For the first time, supporters and fans are invited to join them for this year’s awards ceremony on Sunday, June 6, 3-5 p.m., at Riverhead High School, where a red carpet walk will take place at 2 p.m. Tickets are available for $20 at the East End Arts Council in Riverhead or online at eastendarts.org.

Don’t forget that the Relay for Life students are conducting a raffle and the winner gets to shave Mr. Skuggevik’s head any way they see fit during the Relay on June 5. Tickets are $1 apiece. If more than $1,000 is raised, Mr. Skuggs will keep the haircut until Monday for the entire student body to see. Tickets are available from senior Alex Angelson or at the high school office.

My sincerest heartfelt sympathies go out to my cousins Patty Stewart, Denise King, Paula Reeve and Lynn, David, Tony and Michael on the passing of their mom, Jane Blados of Cutchogue. I spent many wonderful times in her home as a child and she had such a knack for making the holidays seems extra-special. You will be missed, Aunt Janie, more than you’ll ever know.

Special anniversary wishes also go out to my husband, Jim, as we celebrate 33 years of married life on June 5.
