Founders (3-0) enjoys perfect start

Founders Tavern continued its red-hot start to the Greenport Men’s Softball League season by walloping the Pool King, 18-2, on Friday night at the Polo Grounds. Founders finished the opening week of the season with a perfect 3-0 record.

“Granted, we haven’t played Marcello Masonry or Skippers yet,” Founders’ Jon Schlachter said, “but we’re off to a good start. We’ve got more depth this year. We can plug guys in and still be good. We’ve got a solid squad.”

Founders has gotten superb pitching from Chris Golden. He has allowed only five runs in three games. Schlachter said, “Chris has kept the ball up in the air, big time.”

In the win over the Pool King, Founders got key hits from throughout its lineup. Dan Hagerman and Billy Fullam smacked home runs, Pete Castillo went 3 for 3, and Danny Olstad and Schlachter both had two hits and a pair of runs batted in.

After winning on opening day, 14-2 over Pete’s Boys, Founders gutted out a 5-1 victory over Southold Fish Market (0-2) last Wednesday. Castillo and Brian Schriefer had two hits apiece, and Ed Michaelis drove in a pair of runs. Schlachter had an RBI.

“This was the kind of game we would’ve lost last year,” Schlachter said. “But Chris was throwing rainmakers all game and we played killer defense.”

In other games, Skippers (2-1) cruised past Claudio’s, 15-4, last Wednesday. Ev Corwin, Chris Luccariello and John Brush Jr. all had three hits while Matt Verity had two hits and five RBI for Skippers.

“Chris and John jump-started us every inning,” Corwin, the Skippers first baseman, said. “The top of the order really got us going.”

John Brush Sr. pitched a solid game for Skippers and the defense behind him was virtually flawless.

Greg Cochio had a pair of singles and a double for Claudio’s (0-2).

“Skippers is a good, consistent hitting team and we had a tough time defensively,” Claudio’s Manager Matt Vescovi said. “We made a lot of errors and we’ve got to get our bats going.”

In the first game that night, Pool King edged Pete’s Boys, 10-9, in eight innings. Mike McGinness led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off home run to win the game for Pool King.
