Helen Marie Verity

Helen Marie Verity of Laughing Waters, Southold, died at her home on July 15, 2010, at the age of 96.

She was born in Southold on April 22, 1914, to William and Mary (nà e Razanauskas) Zukas. After graduation from Southold schools, she married John G. Verity of Greenport on Jan. 18, 1938, in West Palm Beach, Fla. He predeceased her in 1983.

A communicant of St. Patrick R.C. Church, she was also a member of St. Patrick’s Rosary Society, Southold Sunshine Society and the Knights of Lithuania.

Helen and her husband spent winters in Florida, where they worked at the Breakers Hotel in West Palm Beach.

She loved life and especially the outdoors, where she clammed from her little rowboat and gardened. She will be remembered as a great cook, passionate about seafood and family get-togethers.

She is survived by her son, David John (Barbara) Verity of Southold; a brother, Michael Zukas of Southold; and three step-grandsons. She was predeceased by her siblings, William, Charles, Paul, Daniel, John, Anna, Eva, Mazie (Mary), Julia, Adelaide (Bridget), Nellie and Rose.

Visiting hours were held Sunday, July 18, 2010, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where the Knights of Lithuania conducted a prayer service, and parish prayer services were conducted by Father Peter Garry. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, July 19, 2010, at St. Patrick R.C. Church by Father George Michell with assistance from the Ministry of Consolation. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
