This more-humid-than-normal summer is coming to an end (even though it doesn’t officially end until mid-September). Regular readers of this column know I’m a lover of the heat but even I have to admit there were some days that were too hot and humid to enjoy. Let’s hope September is a bit kinder to all of us.

The Peconic Bay Chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America just celebrated its 25th anniversary and is embarking on its next quarter century. Its first business meeting of the 2010-11 season will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church of Southold. The Guild welcome stitchers of all abilities and experience. Its mission is to celebrate the heritage of embroidery and advance the highest standards of excellence in its practices. For information, call Doris Bayles, 765-8071.

Former Greenporters Carol and Floyd “Sonny” Standish celebrated a quiet 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 6, followed on Aug. 7 by Carol’s birthday. Both are enjoying their retirement in Pennsylvania.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church’s annual World Mission Craft Sale will be held at its Parish Hall on Friday, Sept. 3, 1-5 p.m.; Saturday, the 4th, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, the 5th, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Monday, Sept. 6, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be jewelry, games, home furnishings, accessories, clothing and musical instruments. For information, call 730-3982.

Attention members of the GHS Class of 2000: Your 10th reunion weekend has arrived. It will take place at the Townsend Manor Inn on Saturday, Aug. 28, beginning at 7 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. If you’re just now deciding to go, you need to contact Ryane Rogers at [email protected] to let her know.

The reunion will include a 50/50 raffle in memory of classmate Johanna Saetta. Proceeds will be used for a scholarship for one of Greenport’s graduating seniors this year. Raffle tickets are $20 each and the drawing will be held Sept. 11. For tickets, contact Ryane at the e-mail address shown above.

Healing wishes go out to my cousin Michael Craddock, who was injured while serving our country in Afghanistan. Mike is the grandson of former Greenporter Gayle Wilburn Bealer.

Celebrating birthdays this week are Shirley Sieverman today, Aug. 26; Cherise Hofsiss and Eileen Dillon on the 29th; Katie Schulz, Kevin Hunt, Pudge Dzenkowski and Shannon Hofsiss on the 28th; Jack Grilli and Mike Volinski Jr. on the 29th; Lauren Sanwald on the 31st; and Michael Rempe and Brian Grilli on Sept. 1.

Celebrating the day they exchanged their wedding vows are Eileen and Paul Skurnick, who married 32 years ago today, Aug. 26.

I’ve been getting some calls on Monday afternoon and evening with regard to putting something in the column, so I’d like to remind everyone once again that I submit my column to the paper shortly after dinnertime on Sunday evening.
