In honoring former San Simeon by the Sound board president Robert Wieczorek and his wife, Dr. Rita Wieczorek (right), and members of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church during Sunday’s fundraiser at Shelter Island Yacht Club, new board president Marie Beninati (left) described how the recipients helped develop the Center for Nursing, Rehabilitation and Day Care. In 2004, the church supported the formation of a nonprofit community board to operate the center, clearing the way for acquisition of a state grant to modernize the residential quarters and create the day care center. Under Mr. Wieczorek’s leadership and with the efforts of Dr. Wieczorek, San Simeon has advanced its mission of care, Ms. Beninati said. The Rev. Garret Johnson (not pictured) accepted the award on behalf of the St. Peter’s congregation.

It’s August already. Can you believe it? Before you know it, another month will pass and I’ll be lamenting the fact that it’s just about time to return to school. Actually, I’m ready to go now but don’t tell my co-workers. They’ll think I’m certifiably insane for admitting that.

The Greenport Fire Department is looking for some new Junior members. There will be a meeting for anyone interested on Sunday, Aug. 8, at 9 a.m. at Fire Station No. 1 on Third Street. The Juniors group is open to all kids in grades 7-12 who live in the Greenport Fire District and/or attend Greenport High School. You’ll find that they do a lot of hands-on projects to make the group interesting for its members.

Speaking of the fire department, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the annual Standard Hose chicken barbecue on Aug. 21, 4-7 p.m. on the main firehouse grounds. Takeout orders will be available. Tickets are $20 per person and are available from any Standard Hose member or daily at the firehouse.

Cassie Shedrick took a break from her busy schedule to head upstate this past week to spend some time with her longtime friend Gabby Blasko, daughter of former Greenporters Carla and Gary Blasko.

Congratulations to Josh Horton and company. From all reports the NOFO Rock and Folk Fest was a huge success and well-organized as well. Next year can you work on getting Billy Joel and Rod Stewart?

One of the perks of working for a major airline is that you get free or low-fare flights. Since my nephew Seamus O’Connell works for one, he and his dad, Kip, spontaneously boarded a flight to the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia for the weekend. Must be nice!!! Hope you had a good time!

Celebrating another birthday this week are Traci Kannwischer, Donna Angevine, Donna Dunkirk, Mercedes Edwards and Sean Charters today, Aug. 5; Arlene Hubbard and Tom Crowley on the 7th; Lisa Dinizio, Larissa Rhodes and Valerie Paladino on the 8th; Richard Israel on the 9th; Shirell “Munch” Brown on the 10th; and Tara Sledjeski, who turns 16, and Kip Skrezec on the 11th.
