Bernard W. Kiernan

Bernard W. Kiernan of Southold and Plainview died July 30 at his home. He was 79.

A veteran of the Korean War, he was a graduate of Hofstra University and became an accountant. During his career he served as president of Whitney Communications Corporation and as a member of the board of directors of the International Herald Tribune, when it was jointly owned by Whitney Communications Corporation, the New York Times and the Washington Post, and the Vocational Foundation, a training and placement agency for underprivileged youth.

He was a former member of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue. According to his family, his “passion for golf was only exceeded by his love of family and the Yankees. He will be remembered as a great father, successful businessman and a true gentleman who always lived by his credo ‘Remember who you are, what you are and where you came from!'”

Predeceased in 2009 by his wife of 50 years, Carole, he is survived by his children, Bernard Jr., Matthew, John, James, Patricia and Stephen; his sisters, Mary and Kac Leavy, and 20 grandchildren.

Family and friends were received Aug. 1 at Wagner Funeral Home in Hicksville. A funeral Mass was held Aug. 2 at Our Lady of Mercy R.C. Church in Hicksville. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Donations may be made to Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation, 5 Channel Drive, Port Washington, NY 11050.
