Cutchogue-New Suffolk: In awe over the Harvest Moon

Neil Young sang about it, farmers harvest under it and the rest of us gaze in awe at the “Harvest Moon.” If you’re an early-to-bed kind of a person, you may have missed it in years past. But this past week, for the first time in nearly 20 years, we were graced by the brilliance of the “Super Harvest Moon.” According to NASA, when the summer sun blends with the rising of the autumn moon the two low-in-the sky lights create a unique “360-degree style” twilight that illuminates the entire sky. This phenomenon lasted for a few days and will not return until 2029.

Our Lady of Ostrabrama CCD began religious instruction this week: first- and third-graders met Tuesday at 4 p.m.; second- and fourth-graders begin today, Thursday, at 4 p.m.; and fifth- and sixth-graders started yesterday, Wednesday, also at 4 p.m. For more information, visit ourladyofostrabrama.com

Students, faculty and family alike spent an enjoyable evening at the MHS Tucker Bowl, which raised funds for activities and programs sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions. Last year. SADD purchased impairment goggles to raise alcohol awareness among the student body. It is also participating in Project Alert, aimed at helping youth make good decisions and deal with peer pressure. Congratulations to the seniors for their first-place win. The juniors took second and the sophomores and freshmen tied for third.

Curves in Cutchogue will hold a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser on Oct. 16, with a huge chinese auction, door prizes, raffles, giveaways and vendors. The North Fork Breast Health Coalition will be on hand, giving out information on proper health care to fight this deadly disease. Last year they raised almost $2,500 for the Helping Hands program.
