Film festival winners named

More than 20 short films were screened at this year’s East End Student Film Festival, held last month at Greenport Theatre. Audience members were given the chance to vote for their favorite film, with the top vote-getter earning recognition along with the following winners:

Best overall and audience favorite: “In The Key of D” by Joseph Minasi of School of Visual Arts.

First place, high school: Tie between “Pandion” by Clay Steell, East End Student Film Project summer program, and “Nascence” by Devon Leaver, Ross School.

Third place, high school: “Checkmate” by Oliver Orr, Mattituck High School and East End Student Film Project summer program.

First place, college: “America’s Ninth” by Alex Siliato, Five Towns College.

Second place, college: “Paint” by Sam Bloechle, Five Towns College.

Third place, college: “Final Days Prologue” by Trevor Hoar, School of Visual Arts.

EESFP founder and director Paul Henry said, “Every year the films show more integrity and greater skill, and this year seems to be no exception. The bar just keeps getting higher.”

Some of the films will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. All entries can be seen at eesfp.org.

Take action on estuary

The Peconic Estuary Program invites the public to its 2010 Peconic Estuary Call to Action Conference on Monday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the 230 Elm catering hall in Southampton Village.

Local officials and environmental experts will take part in interactive panel discussions of critical issues facing the estuary, including nitrogen in the bay, stormwater runoff, eelgrass restoration and habitat protection/restoration, and offer suggestions for key action items and initiatives intended to improve water quality and habitat value. Chorale starts new season

This year’s winter concerts by the North Fork Chorale will feature the “Hallelujah Amen” from Handel’s “Judas Maccabaeus Oratorio.” Also on the program are “Irving Berlin’s Christmas” and John Rutter’s “Nativity Carol.”

Rehearsals are held Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Southold Presbyterian Church hall. New singers are always welcome.

Concerts are scheduled for Dec. 3, 4 and 5.

Tax-deductible donations are needed now to support this year’s Greenport Christmas Parade and Santa visit, sponsored by the Relief Hose and Phenix Hook and Ladder companies. Special day for senior choir

A service commemorating the anniversary of the senior choir will take place Sunday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck, with special guest the Rev. Donald Butler of Community Baptist Church of Southampton. For more information call 727-9648.

Computer classes offered

The North Fork Women’s Resource Center is sponsoring computer classes for beginners and intermediates in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Publisher and Excel.

Classes of six students will meet twice a week for five weeks; the fee is $250. Private sessions are also available at a cost of $45 per class. Schedules will be determined by students’ needs. Call 734-4233.

Artists: Apply for SOS grants

Local artists can apply for Strategic Opportunity Stipend grants ranging from $200 to $1,500, offered through the New York Foundation for the Arts and the East End Arts Council. The grants are designed to enable artists outside New York City to take advantage of opportunities that can significantly benefit their work or career development.

Artists working in all visual media, as well as musicians, performers and writers, may apply for grants to support third-party opportunities that will occur between Nov. 1, 2010, and May 21, 2011.

All applications are due at the EEAC office in Riverhead by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24.

To qualify, you must live full-time in Suffolk or Nassau county, be at least 18 and not be enrolled in a degree program. For an application form, visit nyfa.org/SOS or call the East End Arts Council at 727-0900.

Advice for artists at EEAC

The East End Arts Council in Riverhead is offering visual artists the opportunity to consult individually with New York Foundation for the Arts MARK alumni Beth Giacummo and Joanne Dumas on Wednesday, Sept. 22, between 6 and 9 p.m.

The private 20-minute sessions are not for portfolio review or critique. Artists will receive practical, professional advice on aspects of the business of art such as preparing an artist statement, planning a website, sharing a new body of work, etc. Participants will be asked to fill out a questionnaire in advance.

Registration is limited. Please call 369-2171 to make an appointment. You may choose your consultant. The fee is $25 for EEAC members, $30 for nonmembers.

Beginners labyrinth class

A workshop to teach the use and history of the labyrinth and featuring designs, dowsing, journal writing and group sharing will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Parish Church and The Grange at 5627 Sound Ave., Riverhead. It will be conducted by Lisa Barrow, a graduate of the New York Institute of Chinese Medicine, who has a background in acupuncture and herbology. A light lunch will be served.
