Ivonne Hernandez

Ivonne Hernandez of Orient died Sept. 11 at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. She was 63.

She was born Oct. 6, 1946, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Enrique and Gloria (Soto) Bird and moved to the United States as a child. She was raised in New York City, where she graduated from high school and attended college.

She worked for Suffolk County Child Protective Services for 20 years before retiring. She married Jose Hernandez in Greenport on Oct. 9, 1993.

A member of Orient Congregational Church, Ms. Hernandez enjoyed reading, gardening and collecting Santa Claus antiques, according to her family, who said she was “a wonderful woman with a great sense of humor and a heart of gold.”

Ms. Hernandez is survived by her husband; her sons, Jere Dolan of Buffalo, Sean Dolan of Portland, Ore., and twins Luke and Zachary Hernandez of Orient; and her sister, Gloria Kovacs of Naples, Fla.

Funeral services were conducted Sept. 14 at Orient Congregational Church by the Rev. Ann Van Cleef. Interment followed at Orient Central Cemetery.
