It’s time to start filling in the empty slots on your calendar with school dates, special events, birthdays and everything else you need to know. So take out a pencil, because here are some dates to remember.

With classes starting right after Labor Day, the school-related calendar fills up quickly. Tuesday, Sept. 14, is Open School Night for grades 7 and 8. The following Tuesday, Sept. 21, is slated for high school Open School Night. Parents, this is your chance to meet the teachers, hear about curriculum and to become a member of the PTSA, Booster Club or Friends of Music. There’s something for everyone and every organization can use your help.

Interested in joining the East End LionsClub? Diane Graeb, this year’s president, invites anyone to e-mail her for details on how to join at [email protected]. The group meets twice a month, on the first and third Tuesdays. Their major event of the season is the annual fashion show at Giorgio’s, scheduled this year for Nov. 10. Put together a table of 10-12 and come have some fun for a good cause. Contact Diane for details or tickets, which are $48.

Homecoming will be here before you know it. This year, things are a little different. There will be no parade on Saturday! Homecoming will be Friday, Sept. 24, with the following games: varsity girls’ tennis vs. Southampton at 4 p.m.; varsity girls’ volleyball vs. Hampton Bays, also at 4; JV girls’ volleyball vs. Hampton Bays at 5:45 p.m.; varsity girls’ soccer vs. Southampton at 5 p.m.; and the boys’ game under the lights vs. Hampton Bays at 7:30 p.m. In addition, Lucas Ford will be hosting a fundraiser called “Drive One.” For each test drive taken, Ford will donate $20 to our athletic booster club, up to a total of $6,000. That evening, of course, there will be a homecoming dance; time to be announced. Come root for the home teams!

A reminder that junior high sports begin Sept. 13 and all student athletes must have an updated physical, with a health history form and parent permission on file in the nurse’s office. The necessary forms can all be found on the website under athletics.

Happy anniversary wishes go to the following couples this week: Joe and Dot Pfaff and Sandy and Rick Gannon today, Sept. 9, and David and Suzanne Martinez on the 11th.

A very special happy birthday wish goes to my daughter, Vanessa, who turns 23 on Sept. 12. Also celebrating this week are Jenny Stype on the 10th; Louis Troisi and Lexington Horton on the 11th; Frank Murphy, Kim Ulmet and Cissy Scaramucci on the 12th; Taylor Gildersleeve and Kristy Palmer on the 13th; and Erica Fedison, Autumn Reichardt and Kimberly Scheer on the 15th.

Lenny Llewellyn called to share last month’s weather stats. The highest temp for August was 95 degrees on the 31st; the lowest was on the 24th, at 66 degrees. Four days reached over 90, the average temperature was 73.6 and 1.01 inches of rain fell.

September’s book discussion selection, available at the library, is “Bel Canto” by Anne Patchell. The discussion will take place Thursday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.
