Carl causes ferry cancellations

With Hurricane Carl approaching, Cross Sound Ferry has cancelled most of its Friday trips between Orient and New London, but the Shelter Island ferries continue to run without interruption.
All Sea Jet passenger-only service has been cancelled for Friday. The last auto ferry of the day will leave New London at 3 p.m. with the final Orient Point departure at 5 p.m.
The ferry has also cancelled four Saturday trips, the 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. departures from Orient Point and the 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. New London boats.
As of 1:30 p.m. Friday, North Ferry, which connects Greenport to Shelter Island, and South Ferry that connects Shelter Island to North Haven, were not anticipating any cancellations.
A North Ferry representative said the company’s main concern is the 6 p.m. high tide. An extremely high tide could cause docking difficulties leading to delays. Tish Clark at South Ferry said no service interruptions are anticipated.
“We run in pretty stiff winds and a lot of rain,” she said.
