Greenport: Go Porters!

Can you believe it? October is halfway out the door already. I see the leaves turning color in several places in the Village. It’s such a beautiful time of year.
I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the efforts of Charmaine Freeman, Ebony Freeman, Nicole Ellerson and Crystal Anderson. These four young ladies are doing something positive to commemorate the lives of Corey Freeman and Naquawn Treadwell. On Friday, Oct. 22, they’ll host a benefit concert and proceeds will go toward the rebuilding of the Third Street basketball court.
Greenport native Mike Check will perform for the first time in his hometown. Also on the bill are mix champion Bigg Premiere and a few other performers. A catered dinner will be held before the concert at the Third Street firehouse from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The music begins at 8 p.m. at Townsend Manor Inn and runs until 2 a.m. Ticket are as $40 for dinner and the concert, $20 for dinner only and $25 for the concert only. How wonderful Homecoming week was at GHS! The highlight was the presentation of the Homecoming Queen Johanna Vourlides, King Tyler McNeil and their court: seniors Katie Walden and Peter Anderer; juniors Alexis Reed and Jalen Shelby; sophomores Shelby Kostal and Richie Wysocki; and freshmen Skye Gillespie and Jack Volinski.
Congratulations to the Porter football team, whose 39-8 victory over Center Moriches was the icing on the cake for Homecoming week. They now have a 3-2 record. If you feel like taking a bit of a ride tomorrow, the team hits the road to take on the Mariners of Southampton Friday at 7 p.m.
The band concert I mentioned last week will be held at the school Nov. 12, not Oct. 12. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. and run through until 9:30. Participants include, but are not limited to, The Entertainment, Bright Coloured Lights, You Again and Eight Track Mind.  Tickets are $10 per person and the proceeds will go toward the purchase of sound equipment for the school.
San Simeon by the Sound will host a Halloween costume party on Saturday, Oct. 30, starting at 2:30 p.m. There will be a costume contest, games, treats and prizes. The party is open to the general public and all are welcome.
The ELIH Auxiliary will sponsor a sterling silver jewelry sale in the hospital conference room on Friday, Oct. 29, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, call 477-5196.
Birthday wishes this week to Jim’s uncle Tony Dinizio today, Oct. 14; MaryAnn Jaeger on the 15th; Michelle Hooten, Richie Wysocki and Patricia Bell on the 18th; Tina Leonard on the 19th; and Jessica Heaney, Mary Herrmann and JoJo Moore on the 20th.
The happiest of anniversaries this week to our very dear friends, Barbara and Steve Damiani, who celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary Oct. 15. Also celebrating on the 15th are Betty and Carl Blasko, marking anniversary number 61. Lee and David Walker toast 31 years together on the 20th.
