Greenport: Cub Scout Pack 51 will hold Open Pack Night Oct. 27

This may come as a shock to some of you, but I really don’t like cold weather! Friday night we had the cold and the wind over in Southampton and, just to make sure we were totally miserable, the powers that be threw in a cold, biting rain. However, as the saying goes, after the rain, the rainbow. Porter football fans experienced just that with a 15-0 win over the Mariners. This Friday will be the season’s final home game, with the Porters hosting Bayport-Blue Point.  Let’s keep that winning streak going, boys!
Greenport Cub Scout Pack 51 will hold an Open Pack Night on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Holy Trinity Church at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in joining Cub Scouts is welcome. Halloween costumes are optional. There will be a special mystery guest, bobbing for apples, sweet treats and goody bags. Come see what Cub Scouting is all about!
Pack 51 has also started its annual Christmas wreath sale. Scouts will be visiting local merchants and neighborhood homes in the next two weeks. Sales of these wreaths will help keep scouting running, so please support your local scouts. If you’d like a  beautifully decorated wreath or centerpiece and don’t know a Cub Scout, contact Midge Melrose at [email protected] or 477-0542.
The 2010 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards were announced Oct. 13 and former Greenporter Steve Burt’s latest novel, “FreeK Camp: Psychic Teens in a Paranormal Thriller,” won the silver medal for Best Young Adult Horror/Mystery of the Year. It previously won two gold Mom’s Choice Awards, the gold for N.Y. Beach Book of the Year for Teens and the Hollywood Book Festival Award silver for Best Teen Fiction. Way to go, Steve.
Don’t forget the ‘Forever Young’ benefit this Friday night. Proceeds will go toward refurbishing the Third Street basketball court in memory of Corey Freeman and Naquawn Treadwell. For information and tickets, call 566-7737.
