Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Calling all trick-or-treaters!

The Cutchogue Fire Department and its Ladies Auxiliary invite you to join them Sunday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m, for the annual children’s Halloween parade. Participants may start gathering at 5:30 at the Village Green and Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library. The march will proceed east, through Cutchogue Village, and finish at the Cutchogue firehouse. Special appearances will be made by the CFD marching band and Sparky the Firedog.
The Mattituck High School PTSA invites you and the kids to a night of spooky fun on Friday, Oct. 29, 5–9 p.m. at Krupski Family Farm. Admission is a discounted $5 fee. Proceeds benefit the PTSA scholarship fund.
Back by popular demand: “Life in the Past Lane … Cutchogue and New Suffolk Remembered.” Local historian and founder of the Historical Council founder Jim Grathwohl is curator of the exhibit, which he and archivist Mariella Ostroski assembled last year. Pictures of people. places and events from years past will remind viewers of a less hectic existence. Added this year are memorabilia from the council’s 50th anniversary celebration in August. The exhibit can be viewed in the library’s mezzanine gallery from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31. On Friday, Nov. 12, 6-7 p.m., Mr. Grathwohl will also lead a “Gallery Walk Through Local History.”
Some like it hot! The North Fork Environmental Council invites you to its annual chili night this Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at Martha Clara Vineyards. Bring your family, friends and neighbors and sample some of the best chili around as local restaurants compete in categories including best overall chili, best specialty chili and people’s choice. The Southold-Mattituck-Greenport NJROTC performed its first drill and athletic competition of the school year last weekend at SUNY/Maritime College. With the support from parents and friends from the Mahoney, VanDeWetering, Rubin, Heins, Grigonis, Scholl, Smith, Hands, Gadomski and Cushman families, the cadets dominated; bringing home the first-place Commanders Cup for the sixth year in a row!
The cadets also earned five out of 10 first-place trophies: Commander Kerri Hands, personal inspection; Commander Andy Ennis, armed exhibition; the team of Billy Goggins, Tom Filipkowski, Kyle Clausen and John Hamilton, athletics; Commander Abbie Heins, unarmed platoon; and Commander Matt Ireland, armed squad. The following cadets also placed in the top 10 (out of 212) in the “Knockout Competition:” Richie Smith, eighth place; Michelle Rosnack, fifth place; and Matt Ireland, second place.  Special mention goes to air rifle team member Shelby Pickerell, nicknamed “Eagle Eye,” whose first shot ever was a bull’s-eye. Congratulations to all!
After exercising your right to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 2, you can enjoy a great scallop dinner, complete with delicious sides and homemade pie, at Cutchogue United Methodist Church.
