Greenport: Thank you to all the veterans

I’m beginning my column with a very special thank-you this week. To those veterans who have served or who are now serving in the U.S. military, I send my heartfelt thanks for serving our country and helping to keep it the great country that it is.
How appropriate that there’s a dinner fundraiser taking place on Nov. 11 to help our veterans “Save the Legion.” It will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at Skipper’s Restaurant, where you’ll have a choice of Yankee pot roast, chicken parmesan or stuffed flounder. Takeout and advance sale tickets are $17. At the door, the price is $18. Tickets are available at Skipper’s. Let’s get out there and support the Greenport Legion and our veterans who are members.
Also on Veterans Day Greenport’s senior Girl Scout troop will hold a memorial service at Mitchell Park at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
The Angel Tree is all set up in the school’s main lobby. Right now it’s bare, but Jillian Ruroede will soon be posting wishes from families in the hope that their holidays this year will be happy. Angel wishes will be available in the school lobby on Nov. 22. Pick one and help a family in need. All wrapped gifts are due at the school by Dec. 17, with the angel attached. For more information, call Jillian at 477-1950, ext. 232.
The Eastern Long Island Hospital Auxiliary will hold its Boutique on Wheels on Nov. 12 in the conference room from 8 to 4 p.m. You can shop for beautiful handbags, scarves, shawls and more. For further information, please call 477-5196.
An informational meeting about work force (affordable) housing will be held at the Greenport United Methodist Church parish hall on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., open to all.
Birthday wishes go out this week to Margaret Hurley and Charlie Corwin, who will celebrate on the 11th; Tina Land, Jessica Barkley and David Galicia on the 12th; Jane Conway and Jillian Ruroede on the 13th; Lee Fitting Jr. and Vanessa Mims on the 14th; Erin Doucett, Randi Hubbard Juarez, Aebastian Alvarado, Randy Peterson, David Gates and Eleonora Kopek on the 15th; Mark Mysliborski Jr., Betty Kalin, and my cousin Rose Bondarchuk on the 16th; and Christopher Dinizio, Norma Slavonik and my dear, dear friend Lynn Menaker, all on the 17th.
The happiest of anniversaries to my aunt and uncle, Marie and Bernie Heaney, who will celebrate another year of wedded bliss on the 11th.
