Tuckers book seventh straight playoff berth

It didn’t matter much that the Mattituck Tuckers were the heavy favorites for their final regular-season girls volleyball match. With a place in the playoffs riding on the outcome, there was a degree of pressure they had to contend with.

But Mattituck handled that pressure, as well as the emotions of Senior Day, to take down the winless Wyandanch Warriors in three games on Monday at Mattituck High School. The Tuckers held Wyandanch to single digits in the first two games en route to a 25-9, 25-4, 25-18 victory in the Suffolk County League VII match. In doing so, Mattituck clinched its seventh straight playoff berth.

“Now we have it, so we can relax a little,” said outside hitter Lilly McCullough, one of 10 seniors on Mattituck’s 13-player roster.

The Tuckers (9-9, 7-7) don’t know who or where they will play in the playoffs. It is possible they could receive the top seed in the Suffolk Class C Tournament and receive a bye straight into the county final, which they have reached in five of the last six years, winning it once. A seeding meeting will be held tomorrow night.
