Southold-Peconic: ‘Beat the Mid-Winer Blues’ party set for Feb. 11

It’s nice to be back at the keyboard writing my first column of 2011. I hope everyone had a nice holiday season. We’ve already weathered a few winter storms that have taken their toll on our precious shoreline, namely Town Beach. Let’s hope the rest of the winter will be kinder to the places we all treasure.

Southold High School recently welcomed a new athletic director, Joe Braico. We wish him well in his new position.

Staying home on a cold winter evening is nice, but it’s also fun to get together with friends for a night out. Mark your calendar for Friday, Feb. 11, when a “Beat the Mid-Winter Blues” party takes place at the Southold American Legion Hall from 8 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $32 per person, which includes an open bar, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, and dancing to music by DJ Joe. Tickets, advance sale only, can be purchased by calling Rose Anasagasti at 765-1786 or Jen Conway at 765-5122.

The Southold Music Boosters are still accepting donations of white dress shirts, black pants, skirts, ties and dress shoes for the concert attire exchange. Bring any items to the high school between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on school days.

It was great to see Sharon DiCandia out and about over the holidays. She’s doing exceptionally well after she and her husband, Pete, were involved in a motorcycle accident back in October. Keep your prayers going for Pete, who still has some work to do before he can return home.

Belated happy birthday to Denise Thilberg, who celebrated Jan. 2, and Jackie Haase, shose special day was the 12th. Kathy Koehler and Lynn Shaffer both have birthdays today, Jan. 13; Karl Himmelmann celebrates on the 15th; Dot Yanke and Casey Rooney on the 17th; and Bryan Petty on the 18th.

The Southold Sunshine Society needs our help. Their supply of lightweight wheelchairs is exhausted and requests for loans are still coming in. If you know who has a Sunshine chair on loan that they no longer need, or if anyone has a chair in good condition to donate, please call Peggy Murphy at 765-3598. Arrangements will be made to pick it up.
