Greenport column: Dantré Langhorne nominated for McDonald’s All-American basketball team

KATHARINE SCHROEDER PHOTO | Antonio Secaida (left) and Edgar Salvador lead the procession as worshipers celebrate the feast day of the Black Christ of Esquipulas on Saturday night at St. Agnes Church in Greenport. The items the men carry were sent from the town of Esquipulas in Guatemala, where many Latin Americans make a pilgrimage each year to the shrine of the Black Christ, a statue sculpted more than 400 years ago.

I do not like it here or there; I do not like it anywhere. I do not like the cold and snow. I do not like it, you all know. So let’s all hope this soon will pass. I just want to see my green, green grass!

One of the most prestigious accolades to be bestowed on a high school basketball player is nomination for the McDonald’s All-American team. I’m so pleased to report that Greenport High School can now boast one such athlete on its team. Congratulations to senior Dantré Langhorne, who learned of his nomination last week. Stay tuned right here to see if he makes the final cut! Congratulations, Dantré!

The GHS senior class will hold a fundraising spaghetti dinner today, Thursday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets are available from any senior class member or at the door. The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children and seniors. Takeout will be available.

The showdown between Greenport and Mattituck — two of the best basketball teams on the North Fork — will take place in Greenport this Saturday, Jan. 22. The JV teams will compete at noon and their varsity counterparts at 2 p.m. Hope to see you all there.

It’s always nice when family comes to visit and this weekend was made extra-special when my sister-in-law and her husband, Joy and Ralph Navarro, traveled down from Marlboro, Mass., to spend the weekend with Jim’s parents, Marie and Jim Dinizio.

The Greenport Rotary Club will host a “Locals for Locals Pasta Dinner” on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Church parish hall on Main Street. Tickets — $12 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under — will not be sold at the door, but are available from any Greenport Rotarian. Proceeds will be used to set up an emergency fund to help local families who have experienced a crisis and need support. Please call Eileen Solomon at 516-383-5310 with questions or for more information.

I was sorry to hear that the GHS Class of 1971 lost another classmate last week with the passing of Rob Hess. A celebration of his life was held last Monday. Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, P. O. Box 1048, Westhampton, NY 11978. Sympathy is extended to his family.

Those celebrating birthdays this week include my cousin Callie Bubb (who turns 18), Jason Barkley, Danny Tuthill, Ashley Santacroce and Kara Manwaring on Jan. 21; my “vanilla cupcake girl,” Crystal Anderson, as well as Courtney Edwards on the 22nd; Regina Cartselos (who’s celebrating a “biggie” but I won’t mention which one), Paul Quarty III, Jackie Ruther and Philip Staples on the 23rd; Jack Skrezec and Corissa Owens on the 24th; my cousin Annemarie Chouinard as well as brothers Oscar Aguilera and Joe Miranda on the 25th; and Alexandra Williams, Brian Richter and Teddy Allen on the 26th.
