Patronella M. Rom

Patronella M. Rom, a former longtime resident of New Suffolk, died on Thursday, February 10, 2011, at Capital Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was 103.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 11, 1907, to Eleanor (née Jochmann) and Stephen C. Onody and on September 19, 1931, married Rudolph A. Rom in New Jersey.

A longtime summer resident of New Suffolk, she moved here permanently in 1960 from Ridgewood, Queens. She had been active in the Senior Citizens Club and always looked forward to Bingo and family gatherings.

Predeceased by her husband, Rudolph A. Rom, in 1986 and by a son, Rudolph A. Rom, Jr., in 1999, she leaves behind her daughter, Patricia (Ronald) Garsik of Garner, North Carolina; a daughter-in-law, Judy Rom of Fort Pierce, Florida; two grandchildren, Joseph (Kate) Sperry of Raleigh, North Carolina, and David (Jinelle) Sperry of Urbana, Illinois; two step-grandchildren, Christina (Thomas) Saladino of Huntersville, North Carolina, and Ronald (Heather) Garsik of Huntersville, North Carolina; six great-grandchildren, Lily Sperry, Cassia Sperry, Dominic and Anthony Saladino and Sophia and Addison Garsik; and nieces and nephews, Joan (Jerry) Cramer of Northport, Tom (Joy) Flurry of Mattituck, Steven (Gail) Flurry and Laraine Flurry of New Suffolk.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 17, at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services are Friday, February 18, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Reverend Rhonda Taylor, former pastor of the Cutchogue United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
