Al McMoore, 58, the Greenport firefighter and village employee who had been awaiting a liver transplant, died Wednesday afternoon. Details aren’t yet available, but he had been hospitalized last week for ongoing treatment and tests.

Mr. McMoore was captain of the Hook & Ladder Company and an ex-captain of the department’s rescue squad. He was selected Emergency Medical Service Man of the Year in 2001 and in 2006, earned accreditation as a critical care emergency medical technician.

He worked for Greenport Village for 11 years as a meter reader.

“Big Al, he was one of a kind,” fellow firefighter Bernard Purcell said about his friend. “I’m going to miss him.”

Mr. Purcell and First Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth White had rallied fellow firefighters to raise money to help Mr. McMoore and his family. They will continue their “Fill the Boot” campaign to help the family with medical expenses that accrued beyond what health insurance covered.

They plan a spaghetti dinner at the Third Street Firehouse on Saturday, March 12, between 6 and 89 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at the firehouse and from any rescue squad member, Mr. White said.

Further details on Mr. McMoore’s passing and funeral plans will be posted when they are available.

Contributions to the fund may also be sent to Greenport Fire Department, P.O. Box 58, Greenport, NY 11944. Mark checks for the Al McMoore Fill the Boot Campaign.
