Oysterponds: A concert, an ecumenical service, and a ‘Fiber and Glass’ exhibit

Knowing that a very special Orienteer was about to become a nonagenarian, I was diligent with notes to myself all over to make sure I remembered — so, bada-bing, I missed it, both personally and for the column. Therefore, very best belated wishes to Dick Frank, who hit the big 9-0 on March 20. When Dick retired, he jumped into our community with both feet and used his professional skills to volunteer for everything that could use his talent. Why not say thanks and wish him many more with a note to him at 205 Plum Island Lane 11957.

Don’t forget the Narrow River Singers’ 13th annual concert this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Poquatuck Hall. It is always a memorable event. The suggested donation is $15. And mark your calendar for April 16 for the return of the very successful “song swap.” Details to follow.

Geoff Proud will once again fill the pulpit and deliver the Lenten message this Sunday, April 3, at Orient United Methodist Church. The GEM Ecumenical Service next Wednesday, April 6, will be at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport. That same night at 6:30 p.m., join the folks at Orient Congregational Church for their monthly Fellowship Supper. All are welcome.

Oysterponds preschool kids will lead the Pledge of Allegiance this Sunday, April 3, at 2 p.m., to kick off an old-fashioned variety show benefiting the Greenport American Legion Building Fund. The show takes place in the Greenport High School auditorium.

Janet and Bill Hands are bursting with pride over the latest news about their daughter, Kerri, and her brother, Alex. Kerri was recently notified by the U.S. Navy that she was one of 750 cadets chosen to attend the Naval Summer Seminar at Annapolis in June. She was also invited back as a cadet aide to Leadership/Sail training at the Newport, R.I., naval base, which means she was impressive last year as a cadet. The day after she gets home she leaves again to attend S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) for a week at San Diego University, also courtesy of the Navy. Meanwhile, the Hands family is excited that Alex will be heading to Orlando to attend Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, although, as Janet said, he’ll be teaching them soon since he’s so gifted in this field. Congratulations to all.

Speaking of local talent, stop by soon and visit the exhibit ‘Fiber and Glass’ featuring the work of Orienteers Françoise and Yan Rieger. You’ll be impressed by their work but most likely more impressed with their global dossier. The show runs through April 23. Call 323-2480 for details.

Gertie Rich reported the return of the “fish hawk,” once again hovering at her window on the Sound. It was the same time, just pre-sunset, so she figured that he’s looking to be invited in for a cocktail.

It was 93 here in Florida over the weekend, which I’m sure will tickle the jealousy button of some of you but I won’t stop there. Who would think I’d be getting excited that I found gas for $3.52 a gallon?

Are the leaves on the trees yet?
