Mattituck-Laurel: Cell Phones for Soldiers and Hope for a Cure Cut-A-Thon

With the new season upon us, it’s a great time to clean out some of the clutter we accumulated over the winter months. Collecting cell phones for our soldiers was a pet project two years ago for 2010 Mattituck High School graduate Sarah Conlin — and her parents have decided to help out again this year. Cell Phones for Soldiers is a nonprofit effort that recycles the phones and purchases phone cards for our soldiers. There is a red box in the post office for your old cell phones. If you have questions, contact the Conlins at 734-2488 or go to cellphonesforsoldiers.com.

Amp 1 is here again! Those of you who missed last year’s amputee basketball game against our boys’ and girls’ varsity teams will have another chance to see the team in action this Friday night, March 25, at 7 p.m. in the high school gym. Amp 1 will be also visiting our schools today, March 24, with its inspirational message about perseverance, self-discipline and optimism in the face of adversity. Tickets for the game can be purchased at Barth’s Pharmacy on Love Lane. This family event is worth putting on your calendar.

Did you notice a renovated, recycled, redone living room in last week’s Newsday? It belongs to Barbara Harkins! Newsday came and spruced up her living room with things she had around the house and the results were amazing.

The songs of spring birds are not the only songs being sung this week. Happy birthday will be sung to Alex Gamberg, Skyler Grathwohl and my Mr. Wonderful on March 26; Scott Tyler, Abigail Graeb and Kevin Gatto on the 27th; Danny Williams on the 28th; Ronnie Fletcher on the 29th; and Georgene Shanahan and Shelly Burns, who will turn 4, on the 30th.

Reminder: A mandatory meeting for parents and students attending the eighth-grade Washington, D.C., trip April 13-15 will be held Thursday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. If you cannot make it, there will be a follow-up session on April 1 at 7:30 a.m. in the auditorium. Students must attend with their parents. Any questions, call 298-8471, ext. 3269.

The fourth annual Hope for a Cure Cut-A-Thon will take place this Saturday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hair Experience in Mattituck. The event is sponsored by the Relay for Life team A Dream Is A Wish, a dedicated group of Mattituck High School students led by captain Amy Dries. For a donation of $45 (adults) or $30 (students) you’ll get a wash, cut and style, plus luncheon provided by The Village Cheese Shop, Wendy’s Deli and Butta’ Cakes Cupcake Factory. Thanks to the generosity of the stylists at Hair Experience, all proceeds will benefit our local Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. Walk-ins are welcome or call Hair Experience at 298-4575.
