Video: North Fork farmers gather at Small Farm Summit

About 500 Long Islanders gathered at the first Small Farm Summit at SUNY College at Old Westbury Friday to discuss the importance of preserving farmland and eating locally grown food.

Joel Salatin, a Virginia farmer who is featured in Michael Pollan’s book The Omnivore’s Dilemma and in the documentary Food, Inc., spoke about the problems of the industrial farming industry and the need for a society that supports local agriculture.

North Fork farmers spoke in workshops on starting community gardens, breaking into farming and garnering support for local food production.
