Greenport summer day camp gears up for new season
New director Catherine Matthews is gearing up to help carry the Greenport Village summer day camp program through another season, which is set to begin June 27 and continue through Aug. 12.
The camp program, open to children ages 5 through 12, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at a cost of $600 for the season. For parents whose work schedules make them unable to pick up their children by 4 p.m., the camp staff will provide supervision until 5:30 p.m. for an additional $2.50 per day.
Many activities will be held at the Fifth Street Beach and adjoining park, but the program also includes field trips. In previous years, campers have gone to Splish Splash, the Long Island Game Farm, Safari Adventure in Riverhead and Orient Beach State Park.
The camp program operates as a nonprofit entity, Ms. Angevine said. The fees cover the rental of buses for field trips and the overhead involved in operating the program.
“There are a lot of ideas we’re incubating for this summer,” said Ms. Matthews, a former high school teacher in Bay Shore. Now retired and living full-time in Orient, where she has spent summers since the 1970s, Ms. Matthews said she’s looking forward to working with the day camp program.
“This is exactly a perfect marriage for me,” she said of the match between her skills and the program’s needs. She’ll be working with head counselor Kathryn Ryan and senior counselor Anna Gonzalez, both of whom are bilingual in English and Spanish.
