Oysterponds: A 5K run, an Appraisal Day, and a lecture on lighthouses

I hope all mothers and mothers-to-be had a great Mother’s Day!

Thanks to my mom (the best mom, though I may be biased) for sharing her day with me to celebrate my birthday!

Henry and Helen Moisa celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary this Saturday, May 14. Granddaughter Karen Neese wanted to make sure we acknowledged this amazing milestone! Celebration plans are still in the works, but I hope they enjoy every second and get ready for another wonderful year to come.

Jake Skrezec was chosen from among many candidates as a member of the N.Y. State Roller Hockey Team, and will compete this summer in the State Wars in Cincinnati, Ohio. His team will also compete against other states and provinces for the United States Roller Hockey Championship title in August. On top of all that excitement, Jake was also chosen to represent N.Y. State in the speed category in the special skills competition. I’m sure his parents, Kip and Allie, are tremendously proud!

The annual Oysterponds 5K Fun Run is this Saturday, May 14, at 10 a.m. If you’re a runner, walker or wheelchair racer, please come out and show your support. Applications can be found at oysterponds.org. The event is sponsored by the Oysterponds Faculty Association and grants a scholarship to a graduating Greenport senior who attended Oysterponds School. Hope to see you there!

It’s that time of year again. Orient Community Activities needs donations of flags for the monuments around town. OCA does a wonderful job of maintaining our wonderful monuments in town.

Saturday is shaping up as a busy day! The Historical Society will host an Appraisal Day at Poquatuck Hall, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Skilled professional appraisers from Skinner Auctioneers & Appraisers will be on hand to help you uncover the history and value of the treasures in your attic! The first item is $20, $35 for 2, and $10 each additional item.

Ted Webb, past president of OHS and chairman of the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, will give a free lecture on “Offshore Lighthouses of Southold Town” on May 21 at 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Peconic Landing in Greenport. The slide show presentation on the history of our lighthouses will include aerial and close-up views, and he will narrate a tour of this priceless part of our maritime heritage.

Reminder: The Orient Association will meet Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m. to noon (refreshments at 9:30), at Poquatuck Hall to discuss community character for Southold as a whole and Orient in particular. The more we participate, the more likely we are to be heard by the town.

Oysterponds’ Letters for Soldiers project received a package from the Naval Unit the letters were sent to. As far as we know, the package contained a flag, plaque and medal for Taylor Schombs, as well as photos and at least one letter for Taylor and the students. Congrats, guys, on a job well done!

As always, Mom, thanks for being a great mom and letting me write your column every year. Until next year!
