Southold Police Captain Martin Flatley will become chief of the police department on July 5, replacing retiring Chief Carlisle Cochran.

Capt. Flatley was appointed tonight by the Southold Town Board and will be officially sworn in at the Town Board’s July 5 session.

The Suffolk County Department of Civil Service approved the provisional appointment that will become permanent as soon at the captain has taken and passed the Civil Service test, Supervisor Scott Russell said.

Capt. Flatley joined the force more than 30 years ago, at the same time as Chief Cochran, and the two had expected to retire together. But the chief recently announced his decision a little earlier than planned, due to health concerns.

Capt. Flatley had been the presumed favorite for the job.
