Eleanor June Bodenstein

Eleanor June Bodenstein (née Smith) of Peconic died on August 8, 2011. She was 88 years old.

She was the beloved wife of the late Albert J. (1990) and the loving mother of the late Christopher (1999) and Eric (2007) and Gary, who survives; grandmother of Clifford and Meghan; and great-grandmother of Julie.

Born in New York City on June 26, 1923, to Andrew Clifford and Grace (née Eichelman) Smith, she was raised in Lynbrook and Island Park and attended local schools. She later graduated from Penn Hall Preparatory School in Chambersburg, Pa., and Berkeley Secretarial School in New York City.

In 1946, she married Albert Bodenstein, a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force, and they lived a year on Shemya (Aleutian Islands) and a year in Bangor, Maine, finally moving to Massapequa Park, where they raised their three sons. They moved to Peconic in 1971 after vacationing there since 1960.

June, as she was usually known, worked as a secretary and administrative assistant in the banking, health and legal industries. She also helped her husband in the Peconic Clock Shop, selling antiques and collectibles, and retired from the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office in 1984.

She was a life-long “joiner,” from school athletics and clubs to PTA and local politics, to the North Fork Antique Dealers Association, Southold-Peconic Seniors and bridge groups, and she was a longtime volunteer at Eastern Long Island Hospital and its Opportunity Shop in Greenport.

Friends may call, Friday, Aug, 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where religious services will take place at 7:30 p.m. June will be laid to rest at the Cutchogue Cemetery.
