Art Beat: Open studios weekend on Shelter Island

• ‘Ebb & Flow,’ featuring work by Cynthia Back and Shelley Haven, opens Saturday, Aug. 20, at The Sirens’ Song Gallery in Greenport. In the show of water images, according to a press release, “both artists use observation in interpreting the watery landscape, and their memory of good times spent there.”

Ms. Back’s work includes linocut prints and collage, while Ms. Haven works in monotypes and etchings. An opening reception is set for 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 20; the show runs through Sept. 20.

• The New Suffolk Waterfront Fund’s North Fork by North Fork art show continues Saturday, Aug. 20, with ‘Art, Strings & Wine’ and Saturday, Aug. 27, with ‘Art, Oysters & Champagne.’
On Aug. 20, local musicians will perform during a sampling of local wines; admission is free. The Aug. 27 fundraiser will celebrate “the bounty of our land and seas”; admission is $50.

• The August Greenport Gallery Walk is set for Saturday, Aug. 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening features gallery talks and refreshments in the following venues: deCordova Studio & Gallery, Gallery M, Greenport Art & Design, Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, John Jude Glass Gallery, The South Street Gallery & Framers, Springsteel Gallery, Studio East Gallery, Terrence Joyce’s Dockside Gallery and Winter Harbor Gallery.

• Fifteen photographs by James Slezak are on view this month in the tasting room at Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport.

• The newly renamed East End Arts (formerly East End Arts Council) will hold a design competition for artwork to be used at the 25th anniversary Harvest Gospel Concerts, planned for November.

Designs in all mediums, including computer-generated, that “reflect the joy and soul of gospel music” are sought. The artwork will be used on the concert program books, posters and commemorative hand fans. The winning designer will receive two tickets to a Saturday, Sept. 24, celebration that includes a dinner party at Dark Horse Restaurant in Riverhead and screening of the documentary “Rejoice & Shout” at Vail-Leavitt Music Hall. Some of the submitted images will be showcased that evening.

Work must be original, unframed, full-color and a maximum of eight by eight inches. Submissions can be dropped off by Friday, Sept. 9, at the EEA gallery, 133 East Main St., Riverhead. Entry fees are $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Contact Jean Caiola at 727-0900 or [email protected].

• Nella Khanis of Mattituck is the only North Fork artist featured in Parrish Art Museum’s “Artists Choose Artists” juried exhibition that opens Saturday, Aug. 20, with a reception at 6 p.m. The show runs through Oct. 9.
Seven East End artists served as jurors, each selecting two artists from 200 submissions. Ms. Khanis, who a press release says “paints with exuberant colors,” was chosen by juror Agathe Snow.

• ‘Steampunk,’ an exhibit of work by Art Donovan, opens Saturday, Aug. 20, at Gallery 429 in Greenport. Mr. Donovan will sign copies of his book “The Art of Steampunk” between 5 and 7 p.m. The show continues through Sept. 10.

Mr. Donovan, a curator, artist and designer, writes online about the Steampunk genre: “It must feature genuine technical elements and also reference the 19th century concept of the ‘machine fantastique’ but conceived through the eyes of contemporary artists and designers.” He curated a major exhibition of Steampunk art objects at the Museum of the History of Science in Oxford, England.

• Call for artists: Artists are invited to paint during the Greenport Maritime Festival and have their completed work included in a plein air art auction, with proceeds split between the artists, East End Seaport Maritime Museum and Greenport Gallery Walk. • Artists of Shelter Island will hold their annual ARTSI Open Studios between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20 and 21. Sixteen members of ARTSI will open their studios to the public for free; artwork will be available for sale. Participating artists include Jackie Black, Hap Bowditch, Janet Culbertson, Roz Dimon, Marianna Fox, Victor Friedman, Jerry Glassberg, Katherine Hammond, Karen Kiaer, Diana Malcolmson, Bob Markell, John Pagliaro, Kia Pederson, Olive Reich, Peter Waldner and Mike Zisser.
