Greenport: ELIH Auxiliary to sponsor boutique jewelry sale Aug. 26

Ensign Zachary Daniel, USN, grandson of former Greenporters George and Florence Glew, graduated from Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., on June 3 and went on to advanced pilot indoctrination in Pensacola, Fla. He is currently in primary flight training with the U.S. Air Force and will fly the T-6A Texan II (JPATS) at Vance AFB in Oklahoma as part of a joint Navy-Air Force training effort.

Congratulations to Cindy and Jamie Sepenoski on the birth of their son, Mark James, born on Aug. 15 weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces. Oh-so-pleased with his arrival are his big brothers, Sean, Jack and Travis, as well as his maternal grandfather Jim Chute and paternal grandparents Susan and John Sepenoski.

The Greenport Rotarians, who do so much for our community, could use your assistance. They’re in the midst of fixing up the Adams Street gazebo. They have raised up most of the bricks and are pulling out the plants with the intent of replacing them. They need both hands-on labor and donations. To volunteer your time, contact any Rotarian. To contribute monetarily, mail your donation to P.O. Box 204, Greenport, NY 11944

On Aug. 26, the ELIH Auxiliary will sponsor a boutique jewelry sale featuring Touchstone Swarovski crystal jewelry. It will be held in the ELIH Conference Room from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 477-5196.

Are you ready to get ahead of the game and start doing some fall cleaning? Do you have clothing that hung in your closet all summer long but was never worn? Here’s a solution. The Greenport PTA will have a clothing and accessories drive on Saturday, Oct. 22. They’re looking for unwanted clothes, shoes, handbags and stuffed animals, just to name a few things. They need to collect 100 bags of items in order to have it all picked up by an out-of-state company, and will be paid by the pound for everything that’s donated. If you can help out, email Sandy Ruroede Martocchia at [email protected]

Attention Porter football players: The annual purple and gold scrimmage is this Saturday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. And here’s a final practice reminder for all GHS varsity and JV athletes. All sports (except football, which has already begun) will start on Monday, Aug. 29, as follows: boys soccer, 5-8 p.m.; field hockey, 7-10 a.m.; volleyball, 7-10 a.m. and 6-8 p.m.; golf, 3-5 p.m.; and girls’ tennis and soccer, which are played at Southold, 7 a.m. All junior high practices except football begin on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 3 p.m. Junior high football begins Sept. 8 at 3 p.m.

All athletes must have a concussion baseline test in order to play or practice. The 30-minute exam, provided by the district, will be given Thursday, Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the third-floor computer lab. Call athletic director Todd Gulluscio at 477-1950, ext. 227, with questions.
