Mattituck-Laurel: ‘Catch a Good Book’ summer reading club extended until Aug. 30

Katherine Gallagher of Mattituck and I played phone tag for a while but she was so proud of her son that she didn’t give up. Congratulations to Brendan Gallagher, who completed his Ph.D. in physical therapy this past May 2011. During his last year at Boston University, where he attended the College of Health and Rehabilitative Sciences at Sargent College of Medicine, Brendan volunteered at Braintree (Mass.) Rehabilitation Hospital and created and hosted the very first Boston University Adaptive Sports and Fitness Expo, establishing a network of sports and fitness opportunities and agency support for the physically challenged. Through donations from local businesses and other sources, Brendan raised enough money to fund the event and donate to local wheelchair basketball teams. He now lives in New York City, where he will join the physical therapy team at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

The ‘Catch a Good Book’ summer reading club at Mattituck-Laurel Library has been extended until Aug. 30. Come on down and pick up more raffle tickets and fill out more Reader Cards. Also, mark your calendars and RSVP for the Iced Tea Social on Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

‘Happy Birthday’ will be sung this week to Jim MacLeod, Jason Zaweski, Carol Kraebel, Clay Austin, Barbara Smith and William Green.

‘The Anniversary Waltz’ will be played for Eric and Gail Bressler on Aug. 26 and Pat and Don Feiler, who toast 39 years together, on the 27th. Congratulations!

With the start of school approaching quickly, these reminders may help organize your days. Sixth-grade orientation will be Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. This is a great time to familiarize incoming seventh-graders with the classrooms, lockers and other important aspects of the junior high school. Back-to-school nights have been scheduled for junior high on Tuesday, Sept. 13, and high school on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Looking for information about athletics and required physicals? Check the school’s website at mufsd.com. All athletes must have a physical before they can participate in practice.

When preparing for school, don’t forget to make a point of joining the school’s most important organizations. The PTSA, Friends of Music and Athletic Booster Club will have representatives at back-to-school nights to help you sign up. Each organization works hard to provide our students with equipment, scholarships, field trips, events and other items that enhance their education. Please join their efforts.
