Cutchogue-New Suffolk: Foodie tour second Sunday in September

The word around town during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irene was that 98 percent of Southold Town was without electricity. One need only drive through Cutchogue to understand why. Some of our biggest trees were lost, taking with them the power lines that supply electricity to our homes. I hope you and your families are well and that you experienced minimal damage!

Neither rain nor threat of impending hurricane could stop the famous Cutchogue Fire Department chicken barbecue. As one drove around town, stocking up on last-minute items, the sweet aroma of chicken enveloped ones senses.

Enjoy a day of events celebrating locally produced food and the North Fork’s artisanal food producers during next weekend’s Foodie Tour on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can see organic vegetable, lavender and oyster farms in action; visit a goat dairy; sample treats from a boutique confectionery; taste local wines, exotic micro-vegetables and tomatoes you will never find in the supermarket; and sample dishes made with local ingredients prepared by members of Slow Food, a global, grassroots movement that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to community and the environment. Tour headquarters is the Peconic Land Trust’s Agricultural Center, 3005 Youngs Ave., between Routes 25 and 48, Southold. For more information or tickets visit northforkreformsynagogue.com

Apologies to Will and Juliana Voegel for missing their birthdays last week. Will turned 13 on Aug. 26 and Juliana turned 9 on the 25th.

As school approaches be mindful and drive carefully.

Did anything dramatic or scary happen to you during Irene?  If so, I’d love to hear about it.

I have an early deadline — Friday morning— for the Sept. 8 column, so get in touch with your storm (and other) news by Thursday evening — assuming we have power back!

As we approach the unofficial last weekend of the summer, check out the calendar of events section and make it a good one!

Have a good week!
