Longtime Southold resident Mario Rocco Zulli died Aug. 23 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He was 82.

He was born in Brooklyn on  Nov. 8, 1928, to Rocco and Anna (Miglorino) Zulli and lived for a time in Dix Hills. He was a high school graduate and worked as the butcher at The Village Market in Mattituck for 22 years, until it closed.

Mr. Zulli was a member of The National Guard and belonged to the North Fork Italian American Club.

Family members said he loved jazz and Stan Kenton’s saxophone music, and played the saxophone in the Greenport Band. But his life was his work, they said, and he considered his colleagues at the market to be his second family.

Mr. Zulli is survived by his children, Judith Perez of Peconic, Jean Buoniello of Bayville and Jeri, of East Setauket; his sister, Clarisse, of Valley Stream; his brothers, Dominic, of Glen Cove, Alfred, of Arizona, and Frank, of New Jersey; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Armand.

Visiting hours took place Aug. 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A service was held Aug. 27 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, with Father Joe officiating. Interment followed at St. Patrick Cemetery in Southold.
