Blotter: Graffiti reported at St. Agnes R.C. Church

St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport reported to police that someone broke into a garage and spray painted graffiti, including an anti-Semitic statement and the number 3,

• A malfunctioning generator caused in a fire on Oregon Road in Cutchogue that destroyed a shed Sunday afternoon. There were no injuries. As Cutchogue Fire Department volunteers fought the blaze, Mattituck firefighters manned the Cutchogue firehouse.

• Cutchogue firefighters also responded to a call about a downed pole over Touch of Venice restaurant on Route 25 at 4:40 a.m. Sunday and found sparking wires that needed to be moved to prevent a fire.

Police handled a steady stream of calls about power outages during the storm, according to Chief Martin Flatley. Those that involved sparking wires had to be attended to by firefighters until the arrival of Long Island Power Authority workers, but most simply required informing LIPA of where outages were occurring.

• A North Road, Greenport resident reported to police that jewelry and precious metals were taken from his home between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24.

• Someone removed a LIPA meter box from the rear of the BP gas station on Route 25 in Mattituck between 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Police found the destroyed meter tossed down a hill behind the station.

• Two cars parked on Marratooka Lane in Mattituck were broken into between 9 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. GPS units were stolen from a 2008 Toyota Camry and a 1979 Mercedes-Benz. An iPod in the Toyota was also taken. Police said fallen limbs had been used to break passenger side windows in both vehicles.

• A garage on Deep Hole Drive in Mattituck was broken into sometime between 8 p.m. last Thursday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The owner told police that items stored in the garage and an attic had been opened and moved around, but he hadn’t yet determined what might be missing.

People named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
