Town to discuss improving water quality at Goldsmith Inlet

How does a DNA test fit in with the town’s effort of protecting water quality at Goldsmith Inlet in Peconic?

It’s all about determining the source of the pollution threatening one of two Southold waterways leading into the Long Island Sound. The other is Mattituck Inlet.

As is the case with every other local waterway, fecal bacteria is found in Goldsmith Inlet. The question is does it originate in nearby septic systems or is it from wildlife? The answer will determine the town’s options for reducing bacteria counts. That will be discussed by Town Board members during their Tuesday morning work session in Town Hall beginning at 9 a.m.. A regular board meeting will follow at 4:30 p.m.

The board is also scheduled to discuss Capital One Bank’s recent decision to close it’s Mattituck banking support center, which will result in the loss of 135 jobs.
