Barbara B. Sayre

Barbara B. Sayre of Mattituck died Sept. 25 at her home. She was 86 and had suffered from dementia for many years.

She was born in Greenport Feb. 19, 1925, to Dr. George P. and Dorothy (Ward) Bergmann. She graduated from Mattituck High School and Goucher College in Maryland and married local farmer Edward Jazombek, known as Jaz, on Nov. 30, 1946.

Singing was her life, according to family members, and she was very active in choir work at both Sacred Heart Parish in Cutchogue and Mattituck Presbyterian Church. She also sang with the North Fork Chorale, the Berkshire Choral Festival and North Fork Community Theatre and at countless weddings, meetings and funerals, they said.

Following the sudden death of her husband in 1970, she married Robert E. Sayre, and they traveled often to England and Denmark. They later divorced, and Mr. Sayre also predeceased her.

Ms. Sayre taught in the Mattituck-Cutchogue school district for many years, primarily fifth grade, until her retirement in 1980. She was active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, the Woman’s Club of Riverhead, the Minnepogue Club and Daughters of the American Revolution, Suffolk Chapter. She was very patriotic, according to family members.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Edstrom of Riverhead; her son and caregiver, George Jazombek; her brother, Dr. Lawrence Bergmann of North Carolina; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Defriest-Grattan Funeral Homes. Cremation will be private. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. at Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Donations may be made to the Town of Southold’s Home Delivered Meals program, P.O. Box 85, Mattituck, NY 11952.
